Rooney, 20 Months

  • Loves music - her top requests are "The Wheels on the Bus" and "Itsy Bitsy Spider"
  • Learned how to open doors with lever door knobs
  • Can be a sassy pants
  • Sings along with the radio
  • Took a Waterbabies class at the YMCA
  • Points out every school bus she sees (our morning commute is filled with buses!)
  • Loves to help me bake muffins or banana bread
  • Became even more attached to her "aci" (pacifier) and sleep sack
  • Requests our kisses when she gets hurt

Growth

  • Clothing size: 24 months – 3T
  • Shoe size: 6 or 7
  • Diaper size: 4

Besides shoes, she really hasn't changed sizes in quite a while! I'm even finding that some of her 2T clothes from last winter are going to fit her again this year.

Development

  • Toilet-training: One big thing that happened in the past month is that she will start to tell us when she needs her diaper changed (before we can smell it). She points at it and yells "Poop!" We aren't thinking of potty training yet (she is SUPER soaked in the morning when she wakes up), but it's still a good step in the right direction! I should probably buy a little potty seat...
  • Imaginative: She crawls around and meows like a kitten
  • Building with blocks: This past month is the first time I saw her actually building a tower with blocks and not just knocking down mine.
  • Independence: She loves to try to put on her own clothes and shoes. She can't do it over her head, though, so even shirts go on her feet. At one point she had three shirts and three pairs of pants on. She couldn't walk because her legs were both through the same hole, but she did NOT want my help!

  • Drawing: One of the things on the autism screening is drawing a straight line. I noticed this month that she can now do it!

Eating

Roo is still a good eater. It wasn't overwhelming this month (sometimes it feels like she eats nonstop!), but she eats very well at meals and also likes snacks.

New foods this month:

  • Mushrooms
  • Raw cashews
  • Organic raisins
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Ranch dip
  • Apples

Words

Hearing her say "no" is no longer as cute as it used to be. :) For a week or two she was saying it after everything we said, even before we could finish our sentences. But in the past couple weeks when we ask her yes or no questions, she has recently started to answer us accurately! It is crazy!

There is no way I could list out all her new words. There are so many! It is so awesome and fun to be able to communicate with her using words and to understand what she is saying and have her understand us (clarifying things like off and on make life so much easier!).

Here are just a few of my favorite things she says right now:

  • Swim
  • Flops (flip flops)
  • Socks
  • Slip (slippery)
  • Kaleb (her cousin)
  • 2papa (her great-grandpa on Eric's side)
  • Muffin
  • Ears
  • Got you
  • Awesome
  • High chair
  • I love you
  • Thank you
  • Yep

Health

  • She still gets adjusted at the chiropractor every week. Here she is in the waiting room!

  • She had a fever at the beginning of the month. Luckily it only lasted for six hours, and then it was gone when she woke up after a marathon of sleep.
  • Teeth: Still 12 (working on four more!)

Sleep

Bedtime: 6:30 pm

It's early, but she likes to sleep at least 13 hours, and I need her up by 8:00 am to make it to work on time.

Night sleep: Typically 13-14 hours

Rooney is still a great sleeper! This month she set a new Rooney record of 15 hours.

Waketime: 7:15-8:15 am

Daylight Savings Time messed this up for a while, but I think we're back on track now.

Nap: 1-3 hours

She takes one nap a day, although she fought it a couple times this past month.

Naptime: as early as 11:00 am, but usually after noon

Social

We went camping with Eric's dad and stepmom this month. Rooney did great sleeping in the camper and loved being outside in nature.

We took a Waterbabies class this month! The first session was kind of terrible (Rooney didn't seem to like any part of it), but each class was better than the last, and by the end of it, she was loving it! She learned to use a life jacket, float on her tummy and back, jump in from the side, ease in from the side and hang on to the edge, blow bubbles, and kick her feet. They do a lot of learning with toys and songs.

For Halloween, she dressed up as a lady bug! We went to the trunk 'n treat at our church, and she also went trick-or-treating at my office with her day care. She didn't really understand what was happening, but she did like to hold on to the candy. Smarties were her favorite since they're the easiest to open.

Parenting

There are certainly some hard things at this age (she has started to throw things, pinch, point at me and say no, push us), but I would easily take these days over having a newborn.

Rooney: Sometimes you make me want to have a million babies. And then I think I about how much even one other baby would take away my time with you, and then I get a little sad. Wednesdays are our day together, and it is THE BEST. Yesterday we baked muffins and then laid in bed together for TWO HOURS and cuddled and laughed and sang lots of songs. You speak my love language, girlfriend. I was laying there just thinking about how lucky I am to have this bond with you and wondering what it will be like when you are in high school. Hopefully you still think I'm kind of neat.
