What the Bible Says About Marriage: Pt. 5

What the Bible says about Marriage

This week's scripture comes from the New Testament  and I love that this passage is so simple to understand.

Hebrews 13:4-6

4 Give honor to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery. 5 Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” 6 So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?”

Obviously the first command in verse 4 is plain and simple. When you vow to marry someone, we must remain faithful. It's plain and simple. Being unfaithful in marriage has become such an issue in our culture that saddens my heart every time I hear about it. There are countless celebrities who have painted a terrible image of what marriage and faithfulness should look like. I'm sure there are some great celebrity marriages out there, but you just don't hear about them as the media loves to focus on the scandalous.

Enough about that, let's move on to verse 5. When reading this the other day I found it interesting that right after talking about being faithful in marriage, God talks about not loving money. As if to say, I know these will be two areas of great struggle in marriages. And the passage still rings true in this day and age.

It's so easy to get caught up in the numbers and budgeting, but the point of all the financially planning that we do is so that we don't have to worry about it. Going through Financial Peace University has changed our view of worldly possessions. Yes, we like to have nice things, and it takes money to buy them, but we no longer seek after those things with a gotta-have-it attitude. We have become patient with our purchases and a lot more practical with what we are buying these days.

God moves on to say that He is enough and that although the stuff in this world will come and go, He will never fail you, and he will never abandon you. So we shall not fear the things of this world as long as we cling to the Lord.

Disclaimer: I don't know all situations and I am simply speaking from my own experience. Adultery is a very touchy subject and I do not aim to offend anyone. If that is something that you have been through or are currently struggling with, you will want to seek professional help in sorting that out. Know that God's loves you no matter what.

This concludes the series for now, but if you have other verses in mind, I would be glad to offer my thoughts and start the discussion.
